Introduction

The Joint Base Andrews community has a School Liaison available to assist military families of employees assigned to Joint Base Andrews with issues or questions concerning schools in Prince George’s County, MD.

PreK-12 Education and School Liaison Program (SLP) Services

Sending your child to school is compulsory and mandated by law. However, how you decide to educate your child is a matter of choice.  SLO services are designed to address educational issues of children of the Total Force by assisting families in coping with the normal reactions to the stressors related to multiple relocations, deployments and the everyday challenges of military life.

The JBA School Liaison provides guidance to military-connected families with children primarily attending Prince George’s County Schools, Home School, and Private Schools in the surrounding area.

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS:

The majority of military children living on or around Joint Base Andrews attend Prince George’s County Public Schools. PGCPS is nationally recognized for innovative programs and initiatives that provide students with unique learning opportunities, including arts integration, environmental and financial literacy, and language immersion.

ENROLLMENT:

As mandated by the State of Maryland, children admitted to the kindergarten program in public schools shall be five (5) years old on or before September 1st of the school year in which they are applying. If your child is enrolling in a PGCPS for the first time, regardless of the grade, you need proof of address, proof of child’s identity, and current medical information. Please visit the PGCPS website (https://www.pgcps.org/about-pgcps/registration-enrollment#how_to_enroll) or call the SLO for more information.

HOME SCHOOLS:

Home schooling has become an option used by an increasing number of families throughout the nation, including military families. If you live in Prince George’s County and choose to homeschool your child, you will need to file a Notice of Intent to Homeschool with the PGCPS Homeschooling Office. For homeschooled students assigned to Joint Base Andrews, there are a few local home education organizations available to provide advice, mentoring, and collaboration. Call the SLO for a list of home school organizations and detailed information on the homeschooling process.

The Private School Review website allows you to search for schools by selected criteria to include location and religious preference.

Moving Soon?

Please contact your local School Liaison 30 days before your move so that the SLO can assist in the educational transition of your child. School Liaisons can provide a warm handoff to the SLO located at your gaining base.

YOUTH SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM:

The Youth Sponsorship Program is available to youth family members of active-duty, retired and reserve military, as well as youth dependents of DoD civilians. The Youth Sponsorship Program has active volunteers at Youth Programs to welcome incoming youth and assist with their transition to Joint Base Andrews.

Students moving to JBA can participate in the Youth Sponsorship Program (YSP) designed to assist incoming youth (grades 1-12) with their transition to JBA. Youth Sponsors are paired with incoming youth to help alleviate some of the initial stressors of relocating. By establishing a peer-to-peer connection between youth currently on JBA and youth moving here, incoming youth can meet and make friends, learn more about schools surrounding the base, join clubs and activities, and make connections within the community!

As you know, packing up your belongings, saying goodbye to friends, and moving to a new place and maybe even a new country can be tough. It can be very exciting too! Youth Sponsorship is one way to make the stress of moving a bit easier. The goal of the Youth Sponsorship program is to provide new youth who are moving to Joint Base Andrews an avenue to get connected with new people and activities. This is also a good way for them to find out information about Joint Base Andrews and the surrounding area.

If you are interested in requesting a Youth Sponsor from Joint Base Andrews for your child, please contact the SLO.
