The Survivor Benefit Plan, or SBP, was established to provide a monthly income to survivors of retired military personnel upon the retiree's death when retired pay stops. Survivors of members who die while on active duty, and survivors of members recalled to active duty from retirement who die while on active duty, may also be protected by SBP.
*Introduction to SBP:
For an overview of the Survivor Benefit Plan, visit: https://militarypay.defense.gov/Benefits/Survivor-Benefit-Program/Overview/
Retiring service members are required to complete and submit all SBP documentation prior to the official retirement date. We recommend that you complete your election NLT 60 days prior to your date of retirement.
All retiring service members are required to attend a one-on-one Survivor Benefit Plan briefing with a certified Air Force SBP Counselor prior to retirement. The purpose of this briefing is twofold: 1) To ensure retiring service members are fully aware of Survivor Benefit Plan coverage options and to make a suitable election, and 2) to establish a retirement pay account.
*Schedule Your SBP Briefing Now:
If you are an Air Force member administratively assigned to JB Andrews, send your Survivor Benefit Plan Worksheet and SBP Estimates to 316.FSS.SBP@us.af.mil. A response will be provided to you within 3 business days to address issues and/or notify you of an available appointment time.
IMPORTANT: All documentation should be encrypted. You can send them via your government encrypted email account or through DODSafe (https://safe.apps.mil/) ensuring you select ‘encrypt all files’.
